The Need

At the Teglio plant in the province of Sondrio, CarboREM has launched a pilot project funded by Water Alliance – Acque di Lombardia (the association of the main Lombard water utilities) as part of the ongoing collaboration with S.EC.AM. S.p.A.

The initiative aims to verify the feasibility of co-compost production by mixing compost with Hydrochar resulting from the thermal treatment of sludge using HTC (Hydrothermal Conversion) technology.

The Project

The project, which involves – in addition to S.EC.AM. – also Gruppo CAP and Como Acqua, represents an important step towards the valorisation of sewage sludge, with concrete objectives:

  • Reduction of the quantity of sludge to be disposed of
  • Increase in biogas production thanks to the recirculation of liquors into anaerobic digestion
  • Development of a Hydrochar co-composting supply chain
  • Evaluation of economic and environmental benefits in different plant scenarios

The experimentation will be scientifically supported by the Polytechnic University of Milan and the University of Tuscia.

The Implementation

The project brought together operators with different skills and territorial contexts, pooling know-how and innovation with the aim of generating value for the sector and the environment. The plant is currently operational.
